Regular eye examinations are an important part of health maintenance regardless of one’s age or physical health. An eye examination involves treating the patient for his or her medical and preventive needs, including recommending eyewear options for eye health maintenance.
Protect Your Eyes from Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation
Every day, sunny or cloudy, you are exposed to damaging UV rays. According to the American Optometric Association, although 85 percent of Americans are aware that UV rays can damage their eyes, only 65 percent wear sunglasses and only 39 percent make sure their children wear sunglasses for protection.
UV light can “sunburn” the eye’s surface and prolonged exposure to harmful UV rays can contribute to serious, age-related eye conditions or diseases. Such diseases include cataracts (a clouding of the lens of the eye) and macular degeneration (contributing to the aging process in the retina). To provide protection for your eyes, you need to find sunglasses that block 99-100 percent of ultraviolet radiation.
Remember, to protect your eyes from harmful rays, demand 100 percent UV protection!
