About the DAISY Foundation

The DAISY Foundation was created in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes passed away at the age of 33 due to complications from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP). (ITP is a medical problem in which the body attacks itself.)

The Barnes family was awestruck by the clinical skills, care and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick and his family. As a way of saying thank you to nurses everywhere they developed the DAISY Award.
