Nutrition, a healthy eating plan

When you're pregnant or trying to become pregnant, you're likely to come across family members, friends and others giving you their input about what and how much you should be eating.

You may wonder:

  • What are the most important parts of a prenatal vitamin?
  • How much fish is too much?
  • What if you can’t stand vegetables in your first trimester?

While you're likely to hear many opinions on these matters, we'll give you medically correct and evidence-based answers to these questions and many more.

Physical therapy

As your “bump” grows, your whole body is changing. Hormones (natural chemicals in the body that help it work), including estrogen, progesterone and relaxin, impact your tendons and joints (where two bones meet). Your hormones also affect your muscles.

While pregnant, you may have pelvic and back discomfort caused by:

  • Altered posture
  • Muscle strain
  • Joint laxity (looseness)

Our physical therapy team can work with you to adapt to these changes. We're experts in building strength and preparing your body for the rest of your pregnancy. We can also help you with:

  • The physical demands of labor and delivery
  • Your postpartum period, after you've given birth

Behavioral health

Pregnancy and growing your family can be an exciting and happy time, but can also carry with it added stress. Pregnancy can raise your chances of having anxiety (worrying more than normal) or depression, especially if you've had either or both in the past.

While postpartum depression is getting more attention all the time, we understand that these issues may come up at any point in pregnancy. By making sure our behavioral health professionals are available to you, we can help you and your baby to be as healthy as possible.

Lactation

Breastfeeding helps both you and your baby in countless ways. It's also a complex process. Breastfeeding often requires support and assistance to both start and keep it up through the first weeks and months after delivery.

Whether this is your first birth or you've breastfed a baby in the past, our professional lactation experts are a wonderful resource. We urge you to start taking advantage of our lactation experts even before your baby has arrived.

Making a plan for feeding your baby takes careful thought and training. Our team will help build your knowledge and grow your confidence as you create a feeding plan that meets your needs and goals.
